To date, 45 private and public entities have pledged to restore over 156 million hectares of forest under the Bonn Challenge.
Twenty-six parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have submitted Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) containing quantified forest and land sector restoration targets estimated at 42.5 million hectares (though much of this total is conditional upon international financial support). Additional mitigation and adaptation measures listed in the NDCs add another 39.5 million hectares of planned forest restoration. It remains unclear how much progress has been made in the implementation of restoration pledges.
The Forest Declaration Assessment and the Forest Declaration Platform have been supported over the years by the Climate and Land Use Alliance, the Good Energies Foundation, the Bezos Earth Fund, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) of Germany, and the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), which supported this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
